Title: L.A.D.I.T.H. (night cache) run - 2013 winter edition
Post by: BlackRose67 on January 29, 2013, 21:32:44
While out caching with cd.cuts last weekend, we were chatting about what caches we had left to find in the Stony Swamp area.

We discovered that we both still had L.A.D.I.T.H. (night cache) (http://coord.info/GCG5M2) on our "to do" list.

I mentioned this at the Meat and Eat tonight and found out that there are others that have also not found this one yet that are interested.

We haven't set a date yet (most likely will be a Friday or Saturday evening), but wanted to see if there are others interested in going for this one soon.

Good time of year to do it.  Easier to "walk the line" when it's frozen.  ;)

Not sure that we are adventurous enough to  venture on the ice of a large body of water at night, especially considering that we heard the ice cracking last WE and other ice crossings have been reported to be less safe than originally anticipated. If you add the mild temperatures of this week, better safe than sorry.
With our "Sight n Go" option on our GPS, it shouldn't be a problem to go all the way around on safe trails.

We tried the "walk the line" method during our night out but even though it was cold we didn't make it more than a few steps before sinking down in to the muck.  Sight and go plus the shot gun effect of many cachers made for a fairly quick find.  We opted to go south and bushwack around the water, that wasn't too bad.  Good luck, great cache.

Will do.

At the moment we are up to 6, possibly 7, interested people that want to go for this one.

It's been on our "to do" list for ages, but we never seem to get around to it, so we're interested in joining the group too.

We're very interested in joining the group, but have a busy schedule this weekend.  When the details become available we'll know if one or more of us can come along.  Fingers crossed.

We could possibly arrange something for this coming Saturday (February 2nd), but since it's late in the week, I'd prefer to give folks sufficient time to make plans.

I was thinking the evening of February 9th,  meeting at the P9 parking lot around 7 PM.

That weekend is the new moon, so it'll be darker than usual, which should be easier to spot the "unnatural indicator" (assuming it's not snowing or foggy).

Would be a good way to burn off any left over calories from GreyingJay's Chinese New Year event (http://coord.info/GC43Q12) earlier in the day.

I have a camp fundraiser/banquet to attend that evening after my event so unfortunately I would not be able to participate, but if that date works for the rest of you, don't change it just for me...

I am in. This cache has been on my list for a long time.  I even tried it once, but didn't succeed.

I'm interested in joining, since this one has been on my list forever.

However, I'm having two wisdom teeth removed on Thursday.
Hopefully I will be functional enough come Saturday evening.

I've never done a night cache, so I might be interested in joining... do you think snowshoes would be required for this terrain?

The trails in there are pretty hard packed now due to the recent freeze/thaw cycles we've had.

I was off-trail in there a few weeks ago without snowshoes (after the first melt) and didn't really have any problems as I was wearing gaiters to keep snow out of my boots.

Unless we get a fair amount of snow this week, I wasn't planning on wearing my snowshoes for this one.

One or more of the Aleutian Islanders will be there.  We haven't done a night cache for a while, so it should be a lot of fun.

While there, we are also hoping to be able to claim a find for Three's Company (http://coord.info/GC177P9 (http://coord.info/GC177P9)).  yukonshawn will be part of the company, so we are looking for a geocacher with under 100 finds to complete the team.  If anyone is interested in joining us, either post here or drop me a line directly.

Looks like snowshoes might be needed after all; 15 cm are coming tonight / tomorrow! http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/story/2013/02/07/ottawa-snow-coming-friday.html

I don't have snowshoes so I will probably sit this one out if there's lots of snow.  Plus I am also lacking transportation this weekend!  :P

Maybe we can schedule another time to do it for all those who can't make it this weekend :)

I can share driving and I am passing everyone on the way to the cache since I am in the east end.  I don't have extra snowshoes, however you can rent them at Mountain Equipment Co-Op (or other places like that)

msg me if you're looking for a ride to this organized cache hunt.

Looks like we should have a good turnout; if I counted correctly, somewhere between 10 and 14.

It'll be just over a kilometre from the parking lot to the posted coordinates.

Thanks graciious, I'll let you know by tomorrow if I need a lift.  Depends on the weather and whether I can get my hands on some snowshoes if necessary.

I'll be there too, can give anyone near the Champlain bridge (or on the way) a lift to and fro.  Sorry, only one pair of snow shoes....

Hmmm... I live at the Ontario end of the bridge.  I'm going out first thing tomorrow to grab some snowshoes from Trailhead so I'll PM you if I'm successful in getting some.

Argg!   I missed this until now!   Most of the group I usually cache with on Friday nights has already found this one, so I seem to never get to it.  One of these days (errr, nights...). If I had just spotted this earlier I would have definitely joined the group.

That'll teach me to check in on the forums more often.

It was a fun one.

In total, 12 of us ended up taking the direct route (with snowshoes on) to the cache from the posted coordinates, although the indicator was very difficult to see from the posted for most of us.
