A 'new' geocaching site - http://www.opencaching.us/
« on: September 03, 2010, 15:07:59 »
There's a new kid on the block!

Tired of the elitism of terracaching.com, the crappy LPC's and AMIAT's listed in geocaching.com, and who the hell has ever heard of navicache anyway?

Interesting, but you'll have to drive a while to get your first cache.

Why not... Diversity only can make the existing sites improve. You can see where they come from. Free everything (until they realise how much bandwith it costs) and virtuals.

That's ok with me, but there are so many caches to find on geocaching.com that I don't think I'll ever try another system.

Opencaching is apparently big in Europe (as is Terracaching). I don't think it'll catch on here, but when travelling it's nice to check out the other sites.

Some people add strange characters between A and Micro like $&?/$#, who knows why ?!!!   ;D

I might have gotten it had the "F" been there.

So, opencaching.com (BETA) has opened. There are already two caches in the Qc province.

I'm wondering if it will have any success...

EDIT: it goes fast. 8 in Ontario, 3 in Quebec and 4 in NB.

Oh well, it started. A cache which exists on geocaching.com has been published on opencaching.com in the Ottawa area.

Better choose your side now and stick with it. I don't want to start figuring out if I already found a cache on one site before trying to find the same cache on the other site.

If I found the GC.Com version of a cache, can I just auto log the opencache version?

A little competition can be a good thing.

Just a note, this new opencaching site is not related to the European sites. It's owned by Garmin.

The problem with this site opening, is what if someone wants to hide a cache in a spot but there's already one published on gc.com there, they decide "well I like this spot, I'm just going to hide mine over here" and publish it on open caching, but not gc.com.  Then a geocacher finds the opencaching cache, and logs it on gc.com or vice versa.

Yes, that can certainly be a problem. It's a good argument in favour of well-marked caches and well-maintained logbooks!

or takes your a TB from a GC cache and drops it into a OC.

It all existed before. The new factor is this new site will be backed up with loads of money. There's a chance it becomes as much known as geocaching.com.

Other than that, I'm sure TBs and GCs went into navicache, terracaching, opencaching.others and al.
