« on: August 11, 2010, 23:12:02 »
Original post by Zartimus in March 2010

List of apps culled from Model 12's Facebook thread on the subject. Some more suited to the out-in-the-woods Internet capacity of the iphone rather than the iTouch. Not sorted or in any order.

Geocaching
Geocaching Toolkit (iGCT)
iGeoCacher
Geosphere
GoogleEarth
AppBox Pro (Degrees > Mils, many other conversions, including currency)
Units (converts almost anything to anything)
WordmasterConvert
MultiConvert
HiCalc
ascii2bin
MathRef
Translator (language translator)
IMDB (movies).
Sign+Symbol
Morse Code
Whiteboard
Dictionary!
3GS Metal Detector
Sudoku Grab (a must!)
Killer Sudoku
Coordinates
Interactive Trig
Off Maps (a must!)
ScareBear Trail (for humour ONLY!)
St. John Ambulance
Textsafe
Thief Buster
iMorseCode
Chordmaster

iPlunder HD - a GPX viewer with field note capability (but no on-board "find the cache" mode)

Geocaching.com has an app and they are updating it as well.

Searching about at the App Store and found a terrific "Free" app called Topographic Maps of Canada. I downloaded it and it quickly adds tiles to it's database that work even when you are offline. Maps are true Topo and the refresh is amazingly fast. Haven't used it in the field, but it could be very handy as it shows all things Topo. (Creeks, streams, elevation etc -) Might help save a nasty bushwhack when a more circuitous but less nasty route to a cache is available. Anyway - it's free and fast!  Inkyfiller

Wow! How did I not notice this subforum before!

Definitely the Geocaching app is number one, with iCGT by far the second most used by me. I`ve done one Werigo with the PiGo app - worked well for me. I`ve downloaded a dozen other related apps, but pretty much iCGT takes care of everything the official Geocaching app doesn`t. (at least among the free apps, when you are caching with 3G coverage).

Thanks for the list - in particular the topo maps of canada app - that`s downloaded now for me could be handy when out of 3G coverage!
