GAG21 - Shadowfax (GC4QWE0)
« on: May 13, 2014, 17:53:45 »
A note to let everyone know that I am archiving Shadowfax due to the way it was treated during the recent GAG21 event.  I had spent quite a bit of time redesigning and reenforcing the original puzzle so it would withstand moderate force used during ordinary manipulation.   However it seems one or more visitors were of the mindset to open anyway they could.  As a result, the puzzle was damaged and rendered useless.

Shame.

I'm sorry to here this, I haven't been out west for those caches yet.

It's unfortunate that field puzzles get treated this way, people will often try to brute force the puzzle out of frustration. The first time I encountered this was at Captain Hook's "GAG6 Briefcase" http://coord.info/GCNCEY which was a clever device that did not survive the GAG weekend intact. In fact all of Captain Hook's field puzzles were in poor condition in a short time.

I think the message here is to ensure any field puzzle is robust as possible on the presumption that some ham-handed cacher will be too impatient to open it properly. The delicate Japanese wooden puzzle box (yes I've seen one of these placed in the woods) is best left on your coffee table.

Sorry for your, or our, loss,
