If there are really 100 000 "pilgrims" a year doing this trail, a phone for emergencies is probably not all that essential. This is no Appalachian trail expedition, she is unlikely to be all alone in the middle of nowhere

An iTouch seems like a better idea than carrying heavy parchment. (Sorry, don't have one, I didn't even realise those wee considered "old" now... a Palm must be an antique then)
I suspect that most of those frowning on the use of hi-tech devices on the trail will still wear modern shoes and clothes rather than what was worn a thousand years ago. Selective authenticity?
