Where to buy UV light?
« on: December 02, 2011, 13:06:24 »
I've looked in a few places but I haven't been able to find a UV light anywhere. Where I can get one locally?

Thanks,
Xira

I'm pretty sure I got mine at a dollar store.  They call them portable or mini blacklights.

Pet stores carry them as cat urine detectors, but they can be pricey.

See http://www.cacheatnight.com as well.

Home Depot may still have some. Not something they normally stock but had an LED flashlight with RED and UV led's on the side like a trouble light. They were in the section that has all the little stocking stuffer made in china stuff they bring in at this time of year. It's was along the front of the store between customer service and the cash at the Innes road one.

Toy'r'us may be another option. Spy/detective gear.

Thanks for the answers.

I picked one up at Home Depot in Kanata yesterday. It's got more features (17 lumen white light and flashing red mode) than I want but the price was OK. $9.99. It works great on some things, but not other. For example, it lights up the MC on my credit card fantastically, but barely shows the security codes on paper money. I'll try it out on a cache sometime very soon.

This Montreal site sells them; if you look at the next-to-last item, it's both a UV pen and light (great for making more of those caches!), and it's dirt cheap.  Shipping will however cost you as much as 4 pens...

i second cacheatnight.com - good selection and prices! they have a pick-up option too if you're passing through cambridge, but shipping is only $1.50 or so.

À L'échelle du monde à Gatineau y'a un petit kit avec la UV et un crayon pour pouvoir écrire UV.

Not all UV or near UV lights are the same.   LED based UV lights usually produce a light that has wave lengths longer then 390 nano metres.    Florescent tubes typically produce a light around the 365nm range.  Why does it matter?  For geocaching it probably doesn't  matter (in most cases).  If you are using the light for something else like say checking for counterfeit notes then you need the shorter wave lengths.   There is a cache being published for BFL Boot Camp that will highlight the difference in these wave lengths.
