Geocaching with Linux
« on: January 01, 2012, 20:37:39 »
I ran into some computer problems with windows and am giving Ubuntu a try.  My question is, are there any linux based programs out there for organizing geocaches, or getting them onto my gps?

Thanks,

Chris

I've had some success with running GSAK using Wine under Ubuntu Linux (11.04).  http://douglasward.net/2011/01/21/gsak-works-in-linux/

While it does work, it still has some quirks.  I much prefer simply running the Windows version inside a dedicated Geocaching virtual machine, along with all the other caching friendly tools that are Windows specific.

You can try my own  program: http://opencachemanage.sourceforge.net

There's packages for oneiric and a forum here: http://ocm.dafb-o.de/index.php (it's become very popular in Germany, one of my users hosts this forum for me)

A-ha!  I knew I had tried your software in the past and had good success with it in the early stages.  Sadly, when my laptop died a while back and I replaced it with a new one and a fresh install of Ubuntu, I could no longer find the information needed to get it back.  That was about when these forums were "in flux" and all the old threads were lost.

I'll be sure to give it another go now that I see it is still going.  Thanks!
